Ultrasound waves are used to create a two-dimensional view of the heart. This non-invasive procedure evaluates various structures within the heart and may help diagnose many heart problems. The echocardiogram can be combined with stress testing (stress echocardiogram) which compares the heart’s function during exercise to its function at rest for greater precision in determining blockage of the arteries. Our modern echo lab is run under the strictest standards and is accredited by ICAEL.
Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
The heart’s electrical activity is evaluated to look for abnormalities in the muscle, valves or rhythms of the heart. Our state-of-the-art electronic ECG retrieval system allows for rapid comparison of prior recordings allowing us to detect clues to potential life-altering cardiac problems.
Often, it is necessary to record the heart’s rhythm in order to diagnose the cause of irregular heartbeats or why a patient is prone to fainting. We offer various types of temporary recording devices for transmitting your heart rhythm for analysis. Whether you need monitoring for 24 hours or considerably longer, we have the device appropriate for your needs. For long term monitoring, we now offer implantation of the new matchstick size Medtronic Reveal LINQ.
Implantable Device Monitoring
All of our patients who have had pacemakers, loop recorders or an implanted defibrillator receive regular monitoring by our pacemaker technician. In many instances, device monitoring is transmitted directly from the patient’s bedside to our office’s dedicated computerized monitoring system.
Nuclear Stress Test
Evaluates the patient’s heart during actual physical or simulated exercise. Imaging of the heart is performed before and after exercise to determine the effect s of the exercise on the heart. This allows our doctors to detect subtle blockages in the arteries supplying blood to the heart. Our lab is nationally accredited by ICANL and offers a state-of-the-art scanner that allows images to be collected while the patient is comfortably seated in an upright position.
Exercise Stress Test (treadmill)
This test is more sensitive than a routine EKG, as it evaluates electrical activity during physical exercise and detects the presence of blockages in the arteries. The procedure is used for initial diagnosis, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of any treatment programs. Frequently, stress tests are coupled with either nuclear or echocardiographic imaging which enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the test.
Analyzing blood samples provides valuable information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions. We also offer advanced lipid testing which allows our cardiologists to manage difficult cholesterol problems. Most labs are drawn in our office for the patient’s convenience.
High cholesterol and various cholesterol problems are common and may be a significant risk factor to you developing a heart attack or stroke. Management of high cholesterol or elevated blood fats (lipids) is an extremely important function of your cardiologist. We have expertise in managing the most stubborn lipid problems.
Medications are frequently used in the management of various heart and cardiovascular problems. Whether your issue is a rhythm disorder, high cholesterol or a coronary artery blockage, be assured that the doctors at NSCC are experienced in using the most current treatments.
